The Aegishjalmur (Ægishjálmur) is an eight branch radial symbol or a stave-rune from Scandanavia. It is a repetition of the Algiz from the Elder Futhark runes. It dates from the early Old Norse era, i.e. the Viking Age between the late 8th century and the mid-11th century. The earliest mention of it is in the Poetic Edda or Elder, one half of a body of ancient Icelandic literature, although images of it only date to medieval times. It is called the Helm of Awe or the Helm of Terror. It appears in multiple sagas with multiple meanings depending on the saga.
